So, you hate the rich
Sunday, September 28, 2008 at 08:56PM Of course you do -- those bastards. They have so much money, how can you not hate them? The good news is that plans are being drawn up to put them in their place. CEO pay caps are right around the corner and tax hikes to take a lot of that excess cash are imminent. However, that may not be enough.
Hopefully it will be redistributed to you. Of course, they will raise prices so the money you receive will not go as far, but that can be remedied, too, with price caps. And if they lay people off, by taking more of their money we can improve unemployment insurance -- so don't worry.
What we'll have to worry about is that they will start shipping more jobs overseas, but surely something can be done about that, and if they just refuse to produce properly, government may have to take over the companies, similar to the financial situation. We must do everything we can do to make sure the money keeps flowing so that it can be spread around. With government running vital industries the profit can go directly back to the people.
I know this sounds a lot like socialism, but it may be needed if industries like the automakers keep having difficulty keeping up. Their greed has caused their financial problems -- paying executives millions of dollars in salaries, bonuses and perks. We can't allow these companies to fail -- rampant unemployment would shut down the economy and the whole country would go into a tailspin. Plus, automakers have shown they don't know how to make the right cars to solve our environmental problems -- if we all die of lung problems it's a moot point.
Oil companies are causing a lot of our problems and since oil is of national importance, they should be taken over pre-emptively before more fat cats get off with money that should be going to homeowners in foreclosure and people who can't afford medicine or food.
Of course the whole health care industry should be nationalized because health care costs are causing people to spend all their discretionary cash on medical bills so that a couple can't even eat out or go to the movies -- or buy their babies anything special. Physicians are making millions, playing golf, buying luxury homes, eating sushi and big steaks while the average couple has to eat ham sandwiches and rent a small apartment.
Plus, look what all the greedy builders have done, over-building and wasting money after home prices soared to the heavens. Government would be able to calculate who needs homes and build just the right amount at severely reduced prices so that everyone can eventually own a home -- they can subsidize the homes for poor people with all the profits saved by government builders. Building is a natural government responsibility since they can plan the proper size of homes and the best locations.
I think we are at the beginning of something big where government can help in many ways to ensure equality, efficiency and that everyone has a fair shot at the American dream, not just a few lucky gluttons.
Of course we don't want to destroy private initiative so government can't take over ALL businesses, just the ones vital to the national interest. I mean, restaurant owners and flower store owners would naturally be left in private hands with plenty of oversight, though, to make sure they are making good decisions. We don't want to completely socialize our nation, but something must be done, quickly, preferably before the Asian markets open next Monday.
