Troy Davis granted stay of execution by Supreme Court
Tuesday, September 23, 2008 at 06:33PM There are enough questions to call this decision valid. I wasn't at the trial and don't know all the particulars, but putting a man to death requires proof beyond any reasonable doubt.
I was dissappointed to read blog comments today blaming a racist south for Davis's death sentence.
So be it. I am almost immune to the blanket prejudice against southerners. However, having travelled extensively around the country and witnessing living patterns and attitudes, it's somewhat comical to read this hypocrisy.
Back to Davis, he is hardly innocent, but does deserve a re-trial with all the changed testimonies. However, being part of a group that was beating a homeless man, and being a part of a group where one of them pulled a trigger and killed a heroic policeman, makes Davis a dubious cause celebre.
The outpouring of outrage hardly addresses the issue and automatically moves to the stereotypical blame of southern redneck racists. I feel for the policeman's family today. He tried to help a defenseless man from brutal violence and lost his life, his family lost him -- the world lost a good man. His name was Mark Allen Macphail.
